5 Things My Manager Did That Helped Us Work Effectively At Home

5 Things My Manager Did That Helped Us Work Effectively At Home

Working from home can be challenging.

No one was prepared for the changes in our routines that the Coronavirus caused. My new manager did the next best thing. He moved faster than others in getting us ready for what is now the “new normal.” My office has been working effectively from home for two months now. We are part of a larger government entity that is part of the national defense department.  From the seat of the new guy in the office, here’s what I saw.

The most important thing my manager did was:

(1)  assign us tasks that we could effectively accomplish remotely. To do this as a manager you must know the jobs, responsibility and potential of your team.

(2) prepared for the confusion that was to come.  He  did not wait to be told by his managers how to take care of his team.

(3) revised our processes.

(4) made rituals.

As the newest member of our team, he prompted me to take training on the security ramifications of working outside the office. He found out the right equipment I would need to connect with the team. He identified what we were going to need, what was expected from his managers, and filled in the gaps. There were a bunch of tools available and as security concerns came up he paid close attention to the best practices.

“Through effective listening during senior staff meetings, while watching national and local news on the hour, I leaned on my 30-plus years of experience and quickly determined that I needed to set my team up to successfully work from home,” said Ron Young. “Our team could not have been successful without each member quickly buying in to the process as it evolved.”

He solicited frequent feedback from our team about how things are going and what we could do to better enable our processes. He set clear objectives and emphasized why we were going in this direction. He assigned responsibilities based on the strengths of the team.

But wait there is more.

Early on he established and maintained trust and accountability with us. We have our own remote, short “stand-up” meetings a couple of times a week.

We are required to check in on the hour. Even if in my case, the new guy that doesn’t know all the ends and out of the office, checks in with the team with one of my “dumb jokes.”

“Our success is due to the outstanding professionals on the team,” Young said. “It might take a few months after we return to the office for the ‘new guy’ to fully understand how he helped the long-serving members of the team. Without much time to get to know us personally while in the office, once he began working from home he relied on his interpersonal strengths by using humor throughout the day, while reminding us to stay focused on our families well-being and to not forget how the world is affected by the virus.”

In the government environment there is often a requirement to handle classified information that cannot be done remotely. He established a team to go into our old workspace to do the necessary tasks on a fair schedule. While some things are time sensitive, he is managing that by personally attending to what is required.

“Decisiveness is the one word that makes a good manager.” – Lee Iacocca

Here are the five things you can do if you are a manager.

  1. Plan
  2. Prepare your Team
  3. Find and Use the right tools
  4. Set clear objectives
  5. Maintain trust and communication

I hope you are staying healthy and safe during this season of uncertainty. If you are working from home help your office mates with whatever is missing. Be whatever your team needs to succeed. We can make it.

Focus on the Win

Focus on the Win

There is a lot of things you could be thinking about now.  Most won’t help you.  My barber reminded me to focus on the win.  I have a conversation with him and my son this week on the podcast.

With everyone home, the old heads like me are considering buying a gaming system.  I asked my son for a run down on what the most popular ones are, the benefits to each, the cost, and what games cost.  And introducing Steve da Barber on:
Barbershop culture
Tips on Manhood now
Chasing Money
Focus on the win
“Danger is real, fear is a choice.” – After Earth

He is someone (Steve)  I have known for 15 years.  He’s a humble guy, a man of faith, but street hardened. He has been on the “inside,” but turned his life around.  By his own admission he is not a perfect guy but a man of his word.
He values integrity and thinks we should teach that to our young men.
He came to my attention from a Facebook post admonishing his peers to think better, do better, charge what they were worth and not settling for crumbs.  To not fight each other.  To not be afraid.

Solutions For Good Sleep With Lt. Col. Dave Grossman

Solutions For Good Sleep With Lt. Col. Dave Grossman

Wisdom from Lt. Col. Dave Grossman.

One of the things we don’t do is listen more to the wisemen in our lives.  There are grandparents, and uncles that have accumulated a wealth of knowledge over their lifetimes.

Listen to this sage speak.   My guest coming soon is retired U.S. Army Lt. Col David Grossman.

You can hear it

Podcasting is an excellent way to capture the wisdom of our elders.  It’s not easy to listen sometimes because not everything they say is for everybody. And honestly, not everything they say is gold.  But on this weeks episode I have a guest that is golden.  We spoke for awhile and when he got comfortable he dropped some nuggets I want to share with you.

I didn’t know him personally before our interview.  I have heard of him for decades.  On this episode he will be sharing the importance of sleep and how it affects us, soldiers and folks contemplating suicide.  Who would have known the key to success was sleep?

He is going to talk about using caffeine effectively, how to sleep better, about church security, the Second Amendment, gun rights, the role and title of a Sheepdog, about self discipline and resilience.  This grandfather is going to give some parenting 101 advice.  And he is even going to talk about faith.  He ties it all together.

You are going to thank me for this episode.

Dave has five patents to his name, has published four novels, two children’s’ books, and six non-fiction books to include his “perennial bestseller” On Killing  (with over half a million copies sold).Since his retirement from the US Army in 1998, he has been on the road almost 300 days a year, for over 19 years, as one of our nation’s leading trainers for military, law enforcement, mental health providers, and school safety organizations.

He is a US Army Ranger, a paratrooper, and a former West Point Psychology Professor.  He has a Black Belt in Hojutsu, the martial art of the firearm, and has been inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame.

Dave also mentions that getting a Fitbit to monitor your sleep and health is a good thing.  I put a link below for you along with his first book.  He has another coming out soon.  When he and it is available, I’ll have him back on.

This guy is great.  He is one of a kind.   He was a great guest for the Game Changers Podcast.  Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Here’s What No One Tells YOU about Smelling Good

Here’s What No One Tells YOU about Smelling Good

I was working with security officers and police officers for over twenty years.  I was with some funky men.  Some of it was just a basis of not knowing any better.  Then there are the younger brothers I meet at church and at the gym.  I’m hoping some of you are listening. To all the fellas that are joining the podcast and checking out the blog, thanks!

What no one tells you about your smell. Let’s fix that.

A man sees but a woman smells.

Smell is our strongest sense. It is connected to our memory. Women like to be with guys who smell good.  Wearing a fragrance is a distinctive way of expressing yourself. Depending on the scent you choose, wearing a fragrance can make you more attractive and more approachable.
A majority of the fellas don’t wear a fragrance.  I remember in the Marines the SGTMAJ would say something like, “it smells like a Whorehouse in here, who’s got the perfume on?”

The purpose of this show is to make you better. If you want to attract a woman and keep her attention – pay attention to your smell.

Do I have your attention yet?

What do people most often overlook?  Their noses.

Going to share about cologne and perfume but before that, let’s talk funk.

How’s your breath?  Do you walk around making flowers droop?  Do dogs move away from you?  It could be your breath.  You might have the chronic, halitosis.  There are not that many mints in the world.  Do you know bad breath is still plaguing up to 10 percent of the world?  That is like 7 billion people if I use my hands to count. If you’re worried you’re one of these people, one trick is to lick your wrist, wait ten seconds, then sniff the patch you licked: If it smells, chances are, so does your breath.

If you are not sure just ask a home girl. A friend, neutral female friend.

This, in fact, is true of any concern you have regarding your various bodily odors, be it mouth, foot, armpit or even groin (okay, maybe not groin. Just wash your ass man).

Find somebody you know and trust and ask them,”. If they tell you that you don’t smell bad, then most likely, you don’t have anything to worry about.” Just remember, if they tell you that you smell fine while backing away with their eyes watering, you may want to try asking somebody else.

It’s nearly impossible to smell yourself, even if you’re smelling funky. The receptors in your nose that would normally respond to your own particular brand of smells practically shut down after being bombarded with the same scents for so long.

Basically, your nose goes numb to your own stank so you don’t go insane.

Sweat usually means bacteria, and bacteria is what gives off the stench.  Just because it is natural doesn’t mean we want you around.

Now go by the golden rule of body odor: If you can smell any odor on yourself at all, others can smell it a lot more. Put on more deodorant, use wet wipes to give yourself a quick cleanup, or put on a new change of clothes. The same rules goes for deodorants, perfumes, colognes, and body sprays too. If you can still detect your fancy perfume on you after a while, other people can definitely smell it when they’re around you.

Lets’ talk about fragrances. Forget what my SGTMAJ said.  Buy some cologne.  It will differentiate you from inmates, teenagers, and men that can’t get a mate.

Smelling good and using fragrances is something else no one talks about.   But I want you to shine.  You know the motto of the Game Changers podcast.

When you know better, you can do better.

Wearing a fragrance is a distinctive way of expressing yourself. Different scents carry different vibes, and knowing these vibes and choosing accordingly matters. Also, people associate scents with memories and other people (especially women). If you are wearing scents that are unremarkable or common – you’ll smell like everyone else.  Think of how you think a old man smells.  How does 13 year old smell?  How does a prisoner smell?  Is it starting to gel?

Smelling good, brothers:

  1. It can increase your level of attractiveness.
  2. It can increase your perceived level of trust.
  3. It can effect on how people perceive you.
  4. It can reduce stress levels.
  5. It can increase confidence levels.
  6. It can increase your alertness.
  7. It can double your chances of getting a woman’s phone number.

80% of men don’t use a fragrance regularly!

Major brands create perfumes that are part science and part marketing. They have a familiar feel to all their perfumes. Ralph Lauren perfumes, for example are created to have similar scents. And the same for Polo.  It is too strong for some and just right for others.  When deciding to purchase a new fragrance – let your nose decide!

Cost isn’t based on what is good or bad.  We end up paying for the marketing cost and the image associated with a brand.

In the podcast I’ll be sharing in detail:

  1. The types of fragrances.
  2. How to test them.
  3. Which one to buy.
  4. How to apply them best.

I know this is something that nobody else had the guts to share with you but I had to.  I want you to win.  I want you to rock it.  I want you to be a game changer.

How To Make Your Podcast As Fierce As Beyonce

How To Make Your Podcast As Fierce As Beyonce

If you are serious about your business, then you want it to be fierce. You want it to be intentional and powerful. Think about that for a minute. If your podcast, which represents your brand, you, is not intentional or powerful then what is it? Why would anyone want to waste their time or money with it?

The American singer, songwriter, actress, record producer, and dancer from Houston, Texas that you either love, hate or are indifferent about has been fierce in her rise. Even if you are not a fan, you know her name.

She rose to fame in the late 1990s as lead singer of the R&B girl-group Destiny’s Child. In 2014, she became the highest-paid black musician in history and was listed among Time’s 100 most influential people in the world for a second year in a row. Throughout her career, Beyoncé has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the world’s best-selling music artists.

Mrs. Knowles – Carter is baaaaaaad.

To make your podcast as fierce as Beyoncé you need to do four things.

  1. Know Your Why
  2. Find your audience
  3. Be IntenseB
  4. Be Consistent – (Beyoncé has sold over 100 million records worldwide)

It’s hard.

One of the things that podcasters struggle with after they start is why they are still doing this. It is really easy to meander through until you realize you are lost. You start asking yourself what am I going to talk about next. Who cares if I miss an episode? And you wonder if you are even being heard. If you know your why. You can chart a course. You can plan your show. You will know who you are trying to reach. The why of your podcast is your content.

You got this.

Let’s say you have a podcast called Warrior Cast. You are a martial artist and a nerd. You can talk DragonBall Z-speak, like you were related to Vegeta. Talk about those two things in your show. Got deep with it. Share the nerd knowledge. Geek out on the anime. Also make sure you talk about the fight game, interview fighters, give your audience the benefit of your fails, your successes. Help the person just starting. Talk about the differences of the styles. Talk about a form in Tae Kwon Do and how it was stupid or how you incorporated it into a real fight. There is power in the niche.

Knowing your why will help others find you. There are people looking to hear what you know, hear the people you know, laugh, cry, groan, disagree and agree with the stuff you know. The funniest site at a wedding is to see “single ladies” jump up when they hear Beyoncé song. You have to see a seventy-five-year-old grandmothers twisting their wrist like “Queen Be.”

Be U

Your audience is just like you. Or the you that you are presenting. (Be careful there) you can’t be someone else. You are you. You are unique and have your own talents and experiences. Use those talents and experiences to get what you want, but don’t sacrifice yourself to do it. And you also have to live your life for you.

Fierce is not lukewarm. Take a side. People will put you on one whether you take one or not. Embrace it. Be critical of a form, a fighter, a technique, so others can either agree or disagree with you. Fierce means intensity. Don’t be boring. Don’t talk me to sleep. Have some energy in your show. Don’t scream at me but keep my attention. Podcasting almost has no rules. The main one is be trustworthy. If I take the time to listen to you, don’t make me sorry I did.

Now that you have my attention. Now that I like you. I am going to fit you in to my schedule. The successful podcasters don’t quit after seven shows. They know who they are talking to, even though they don’t see them. They are talking to friends. They are talking to people from their gym. People just like them all over the world. If you say you are going to be somewhere every week on Thursday, be there. Consistency is a good thing. They can listen to your show anytime they want but it should come out and be available the same day of the week. I know it’s tough. It’s a commitment. Podcasting is dope but it ain’t easy.

You got the floor

On a stage (your podcast) you can act like someone you are not. We have all done it. One of the problems is that you can’t sustain it. You also will become a people pleaser and eventually will not like who you have become. Being yourself is important because you will not be happy otherwise.

The good news is someone is looking for you. They are looking for a tribe to belong to where the people are like you. They are most likely not next door. You may have to search to find them but they exist. They are looking for the real you.

Be fierce!

Five Things You Need To Know About EDC

Five Things You Need To Know About EDC

Thank you for listening, downloading and supporting the Black Man With A Gun Show Podcast.

This is episode 579.

This week Michael and I talk about concealed carrying your firearm every day.  When and where to carry is a little like walking around naked.  Some places its comfortable, and other times its inappropriate, offense and even illegal.  Mike says you need:

  1. Mindset
  2. Skills
  3. Tactics
  4. Gear
  5. Insurance (we suggest the United States Concealed Carry Association https://uscca.blackmanwithagun.com )

    Movie Reference

assault of Precinct 13

If you want to see a movie that does everything wrong, check out this 1976 classic film.  Silencers on revolvers, pump shotguns that shoot 3x before reloading and more.  All the things that feed the ignorance and fear of anti-rights folks and those that fear guns.

Welcome to all new listeners. thanks for being a part of my family.  I look forward to talking with you in the future.  Join us online on our Facebook page @facebook.com/blackmanwithagun1

And for some reason I had a little Georgia on my Mind.  I share a little history of gun laws in Georgia.  The past wasn’t pretty and usually isn’t but we have two great groups now in the Peach State.  Check out NAAGA.co aka the National African American Gun Association and GeorgiaCarry.org that is doing great things.  I had a chance to present there and it was phenomenal.

I am a fan of https://Crossbreedholsters.com and they support this podcast.  Please reciprocate if you are  looking for leather belts, holsters and magazine wear.

Mike mentioned three holster companies he likes – one of which was JM4 Tactical.

PS

I realized this week that having a co-host can be a benefit. Michael has helped me in times when I was frustrated with politics of gun rights. His being new and still excited to the movement is sometimes contagious.

I have started a fiction series about a blues playing werewolf named Solomon Love.  It’s different than my pro-gun, 2A stuff you know about.  I am hoping you will check out my books.  I am working on the third now, the first two are available on Amazon and Kindle.  Do me a favor and buy them, review them and support this facet of my life.
